I love both, for most cakes I go for a vanilla buttercream or a chocolate one, but I love using whipped cream with fresh fruit in the summer for my cakes.
Whipped Cream, it's much more healthier than buttercream.

Okay, I had a craving for just plain white cake with white frosting, so I went to my neighborhood market and purchased what I thought was a vanilla frosted cake, the label said frosted vanill cake, took it home cut a piece and eeewww, warm whip cream frosting. I do not care for whip cream on cake, only on pies or fruit, short cakes, hot cocoa and such.
Whipped cream is good for Jell-O and pudding, buttercream frosting is not.

It depends on what kind of pastry it's on. If it's of the lighter variety, buttercream is great. If it's a little denser, then the fluffiness of the whipped cream makes a lovely contrast.

I feel that whipped cream is lighter with less flavor. Buttercream is heavier but packs a lot of flavor. I choose buttercream but it is just my personal preference

Buttercream is alot easier to work with, its thicker and is more forgiving if it gets slightly warm. it will also last lots longer before going off.

Pros for whipped cream are lower sugar content, lighter weight and texture, brighter white color, etc. Cons, though -- whipped cream must be kept refrigerated, and the moisture soaks into the cake or pastry, so day-old items are well past their prime. A cake frosted with whipped cream does not freeze well. It's slightly tricky to whip cream to its maximum stiffness without over-whipping. But sweet butter is tasty, if you whip too long!
Traditional home butter cream is made with 1/4 lb. butter, 1 lb. confectioners (powdered) sugar, and a little liquid. Meh, that's ok if you're not fussy.
I prefer a meringue-based butter cream: Warm 1 cup of egg whites with 1 pound (2 cups) granulated sugar very slowly until sugar dissolves but whites don't cook. I stir with my finger to make sure the bottom doesn't get too hot. Cool. Whip 1 1/4 pounds butter until very light and fluffy. Set aside. With clean bowl and whip, whip the sugar mixture until it's as stiff as you think it can get -- this takes at least 5 minutes in a Kitchenaid, longer in a smaller mixer. Stir in a little vanilla or other flavoring. Fold the butter in and mix just until combined. Air is an important ingredient, so don't under-whip either mixture. Cakes frosted with this should be refrigerated just in case, to prevent softening. It's safe to store at room temperature for a day or so. This butter cream is almost as light in texture as whipped cream, has a delicate flavor, and isn't overly sweet. If it breaks, curdles, or doesn't hold up, you can always add some powdered sugar, whip again, and end up with an icing that's still better than the traditional one.

Living in another country from yours so perhaps not so unusual to say I have never heard of buttercream frosting ... I was thinking of butterscotch flavoured icing. So, if this is the case and I read this correct, butterscotch flavoured icing would be nicer. But, whipped cream? Now, that can go with most anything, even a (carrot) cake with butterscotch flavoured icing could do with a nice dollop too. Now, that is presumptuous! (But nice all the same)
When it's REAL buttercream, then buttercream. But few places make it right in the U.S. anymore. It's usually just tons of sugar.
For cupcakes cakes and brownies buttercream but for ice-cream or hot drink wrapping cream. basically any time you want icing buttercream but if you just want a side of sweetness like on your crepe wiping cream.

Although, buttercream can be pretty delicious, I always tend to prefer whipped cream, instead. Whipped cream is a lot lighter, and always leaves me wanting more. :)

Here is a frosting that everyone I have served it to, just LOVES it.
1 Container of Cool Whip
1 Package Instant Vanilla Pudding
1 small container drained Chopped Pineapples
Refrigerate cake after frosted with above frosting.
THAT is my favorite frosting. Buttercream is delicious as well, but more fattening.
