The laboratory does not give medical advice. Any critical results including a positive TB test is called to the doctor and documented. We do not talk to patients about the actual lab results as it doesn't relieve our regulatory obligation in notifying the patients care giver and that is a big reason why private laboratories do not provide testing without doctors orders. There are exceptions and some laboratories do accept self ordering and having a medical professional deal with patient consultation and contact that fulfills regulatory obligations but it appears that you went to memorial which then sent the sample to that laboratory.
After saying all of that if the blood sample was to screen for TB exposure for you volunteering then such sample are notorious for having special handling requirements. The sample must be collected appropriately and mixed appropriately and the testing must done within 48 hours. If the sample was collected on a Friday and then sent to their lab and they open their doors on Monday then the sample is unsatisfactory. We do not collect samples on Friday for that very reason. They might be contacting you to submit another blood sample if the one submitted was unsatisfactory. That is the most common reason why a laboratory would call and talk to a patient and that is to resubmit a blood sample.
Critical reporting with regards to TB refers to positive TB smear stains of submitted specimens or positive cultures for TB. Blood testing usually is for screening purposes in lieu of skin testing and those are not considered critical values.
