Free observation decks in new york city?

Are there any free observation decks in NYC, we are traveling on a budget although we are able to afford the the empire state or the top of the rock, why pay if we could do it for free or for a cheaper price

Check with real estate agents and say you are looking to buy a top floor condo or rent a top floor apartment,

The deck of the Staten Island Ferry is the best free observation deck in NYC , next is the walkway in middle of the Brooklyn Bridge

I'm not aware of any. There are many free places with wonderful views (the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Fort Tryon Park, the Battery are some that come to mind), as soon as you want to go "up", you either have to work in the building or pay a fee.

You can be sure if it's something worth seeing it won't be free!

There are loads of rooftop bars where you get a great view without a premium (not that the drinks are cheap, but still cheaper!)
