It depends on the extend of the force used. However, the answer is mostly yes.
A lot of different jurisdictions allows certain degrees of self-defense as soon as your life is in imminent danger and the force used for self-defense is reasonable.
On that basis, ridiculously, when a thief bulgarizes a home, the occupant in fact can neutralize the thief in the name of self-defense, including killing the thief. But it does not give the occupant the right to hit the thief excessively.
