My dog got hit, can she heal on her own?

4 days ago, my dad was backing up and hit my 6 year old black lab. She wasn't ran over, but was hit hard. We thought that she had only broken her tail at the base, but today, I noticed a lump on her rear, a inch or two above the base of the tail. When I lightly touched it, she feel on her back and began whimpering and shaking, almost going into shock. The day she was hit, she was able to slowly walk around, but with a lot of caution. She has become progressively worse since than, and today, she could stand, but climbing up and down even a few stairs was nearly impossible for her. We have no money to take her to the vet, and the only option I really have is to put her down if it gets worse. What should I do? If she broke bones, can she heal adequately without medical assistance?

This dog needs vet care -
She needs X-Rays for evaluation, she needs to be on proper pain killers, antibiotics - maybe steroids.

To do nothing - To let the dog suffer in pain and have a wait and see attitude (wait to see if she dies or not) is animal cruelty!

Call your local humane society and see if they can help you. You can also check with Labrador rescue groups, see if one of them can take the dog and get her treatment.

If you call your vet, they might be able to hold your check until your next payday - so you can get this dog seen today. It's always the dogs that suffer when people own them that can't afford their care. If you have any feelings at all for this dog, you'll borrow the money from friends, go pawn some jewelry - or do what is necessary to get together the money to get the dog to the vets.

What is the life of your dog worth to you?

You can't be serious? If you can't afford to take it to a vet, find the very first shelter or rescue group you can get ahold of! How cruel would it be if I hit you with a baseball bat in your lower back, but told you to "walk it off" no need to see a doctor, you don't have health insurance so suffer thru any pain you're having. If that scenario rubs you the wrong way, maybe you know deep down that what you're doing in hoping she'll heal on her own is just plain wrong. Did you know that failure to get an injured dog that is registered to you medical care is considered neglect and animal cruelty? Did you also know that if convicted of those crimes can take away your right to own a pet for many years? I understand that sometimes we fall on hard times, and just don't have "extra" money. Been there! But do the right thing for your dog, and if you can't find a way to pay for vet care, surrender her to someone who can

You're dog needs a vet ASAP otherwise she could be suffering and might need some medication to make her better and healthy again . This is Animal abuse if your dog got hit by a car and is not taken to the vet straight away .

If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet. Surrender the dog to a breed rescue or shelter that will get her the care she needs. Withholding vet care when an animal needs it is illegal and neglectful.

If funds are the only problem, apply for Care Credit. You can pay vet bills off on a monthly basis, I believe without interest.

PLEASE, for the sake of your dog, apply for the Care Credit card and IMMEDIATELY take your dog to the vet for a check up to see what they can do for her! She might end up having to be put down anyway, but there is a great chance she could survive with the proper care - and you don't really want her in agony for weeks or even months, do you?

Hell no. She NEEDS to go to a vet and she needs to go now. She is seriously injured and there's no way she'll heal on her own. She could have broken bones, internal injuries and she's in agony. Imagine if it were you. This is serious neglect to not take her, and you have to finda way to do it. Have you guys even called the vet's and asked if you could make payments or something? I know they have to be paid, but they're dedicated to helping animals and they would probably rather make some sort of payment plan than have your dog suffer.

Your dog needs to be seen by a vet. The injury you describe sounds like it could result in nerve damage. If you cannot pay the vet fee, the vet may work with you. Some vets can help you spread out your payments. Some have CareCredit, a credit card that helps you finance your vet bills. Some will treat the dog and then re-home her (which is not what you might want, but at least you've made sure she is cared for).

I wish you and your dog well. I hope it turns out okay for all of you.

I'm no vet, nor am I very knowledgeable about how things heal so I could be entirely wrong. Broken bones and fractures take a while to repair, months or so depending on the severity and perhaps more or less for animals. Give the dog a few weeks or so before making a decision. Try not to touch her near the injury and give her as much nutrients, protein and antioxidants to make sure she has the energy to heal the injury.

If it doesn't get better after a month or so, it might be best to put her down if she is in too much pain.

Hope she gets better!

In the wild they'd find a safe place, away from predators, and they'd naturally know what to do. I had a dog who became a three-legged "creep" in the neighborhood. About two years later we had to put her down. I know of many things you can use for healing purposes, I just can't remember them right now, except that 1 poppy seed will ebb the pain and 2 will allow her to sleep. My dog in the end was not repairable, but yours is. Vets will put your dog on expensive meds that won't even work half the time. Ultimitally what your dog needs is lots of rest. Dogs can heal on their own. Put the food and water bowls by where your dog sleeps. Help your dog outside to go to the bathroom. Make sure your dog gets minimal excersize. Keep this up for about 4-5 months, I don't think you'll have to put your dog down.

Okay well she will heal on her own trust me she might cripple after so if you have no moneybtry to improvise on something maybe a wooden support so she wont bend the bone no more or whatever she broke i have reascued lots of dogs i have healed lots of dogs you just got to put some logic into it some vets are good but most will just overcharge you but just dont let her move around too much let her rest and she will heal on her own

Ethically and emotionally, you can not just be able to get up daily watching her in pain.

Also, laws have been recently changed. If someone learns about what your father did, which was an accident but you guys failed to get the dog help, which that part was intentional, it is now considered a felony.

It is considered a felony and not just a small fine you pay for animal abuse because animal abuse is now seen as a crime against humanity. Please call up the vets in the area, explain the situation and see if they can work with you.

Some places have a small budget for free work.
Also, are you absolutely sure your family can not afford it? You mention you have a large breed dog, you mention you have indoor stairs, you mention your family has a car.

They have some resources and they, as responsible adults who hit the animal and who also adopted the animal have the intellect to figure out how to correct this mistake.

You are the child and not the parent so please do not place all the responsibility on yourself. See what plan your father wants to make to help this dog. If he does not want to help, please try to call up vets in your own.

I am sorry you have to deal with this very big responsibility alone but try to see what you can do and please do not blame yourself if the dog gets worse because you honestly gave it your best efforts and best help you could give for their health.
