Why is Nursing a discourse community?
A discourse community is described by John Swales as “groups that have goals or purposes and use communication to achieve these goals.”

I was standing on line in a hospital cafeteria right next to the big table where a dozen nurses were having lunch. I didn't hear what they were talking about until one spoke up and said: "Well, MY first husband said..."
The definition says it all. Nurses use communication in order to get things done.
