We have 46 chromosomes, one from mom and dad. How does a cell know at the molecular level to code from either the gene from the paternal or maternal allele.

o typically, both are used.

o In the cases where one or the other but not both are used, it may be due to:
- Lyonization. In a girl, in each cell, one X chromosome remains condensed as a Barr body and the other doesn't. The one that isn't condensed has more transcription activity.
- Genomic imprinting. This is epigenetic marking. Some gene loci are marked to favor one or the other parent-of-origin.
