- 4 + 1 < 3x - 1 + 1 < 8 + 1 → you simplify
- 3 < 3x < 9 → you divide by 3
- 3/3 < 3x/3 < 9/3 → you simplify

Do the same steps you'd do if it weren't a compound inequality except you're "balancing the scale" with 3 parts instead of just two. First, add 1 to all three portions, then divide all three portions by 3. Your goal is to end up with just the "x" in between the symbols.
