The term "boar" refers to what the bristles are made of, not what the handle is made of. Boar bristles are made from the hair of large pigs. Synthetic boar bristle brushes simulate the natural bristles. Many boar bristle brushes have wooden handles, some have plastic handles.

As a person who has always worn their hair long, I've always preferred boar bristle brushes, as they separate and smooth my hair without stretching or pulling it, leaving fewer split ends, as well as stimulating the scalp for stronger scalp and roots.

But that's just personal preference, not science.
