firefox/chrome wont open ie crashes upon startup?

all of a sudden this afternoon while browsing the internet on chrome it crashed. when i tried to reopen it it did nothing. so i restarted the computer and tried to run it to no avail. i tried firefox and it also did not work. when i tried to open ie it crashed upon startup. though my connection is fine and i can acces the internet through steam

other programs work. only the web brosers do not work.

Do other programs work or is it just the internet browsers. I'm suspecting either a virus or a hard disk meltdown. It can also be a memory error especially if nothing works at all.
