Why was American slavery so different from other forms of slavery that existed throughout history?

It was one of the first cradle to grave slave systems and slaves, later on, could not buy their freedom. It was also one of the only slave systems where you were born a slave.

Maybe it wasn't so different, it's just that human consciousness had developed to a stage where slavery was becoming unacceptable.
