It is 60 seconds because it was based from a time when people counted in 12's.

Counting in tens only came standard around 1000 years ago.

It's more convenient to keep it in 60 parts rather than 100 parts.

60/6 = 10

You think/thought a minute is 100 seconds for the metric system is in base 10, everything is a power of 10 relationship. However, the people who developed the metric system didn't develop the time-scale we use. It was the Egyptians and then the Babylonians who kept very good records of time. However, the Babylonians liked to count in base 60, not base 10. Hence, why a minute has 60 seconds in it, and why a circle has 360 degrees, even today.
