There was a concert. A total of 15 000 people attended. The tickets were $8.50 per student and 12.50$ per adult. The concert took in a total of $162 500. How many adults came to the concert?
This involves solving linear systems with substitution. Grade 10.

12.5x+8.5(15,000-x) = 162,500
4x = 35,000
x = 8,750 adults

s = number of students at the concert = to be determined
a = number of adults at the concert = to be determined

a + s = 15,000
8.5s + 12.5a = 162,500

a + s = 15,000
s = 15,000 - a

8.5(15,000 - a) + 12.5a = 162,500
127,500 - 8.5a + 12.5a = 162,500
127,500 - 8.5a + 12.5a = 162,500
127,500 + 4a = 162,500
4a = 162,500 - 127,500
4a = 35,000
a = 35,000/4
a = 8,750

There were 8,750 adults at the concert.

15000=a+s, s=15000-a which makes 162500=8.5s+12.5a become:

162500=8.5(15000-a)+12.5a

162500=127500-8.5a+12.5a

35000=4a

a=8750

So 8750 adults attended the concert.

x = number of adult
12.5x+8.5(15000-x)=162500
solve for x
