Why are we forced into college right after high school?
I understand that we won't be so motivated to go to college if we wait after high school, but I want to be able to travel after school, not go back for another four years and not have any money to travel afterward. I Don't want to wait until I retire and am too old to do the things I can do now. It's like if you Don't go straight to college after you graduate high school then you're considered a failure, or people just think less of you. That or you have to disappoint your family. I feel like I need to mature more before deciding what I want to do for the rest of my life, too. That's just a big decision for someone my age, and it seems that people change their minds after college a lot, pretty much wasting that four years and the money they spent for college. Am I wrong to think like this?

I don't think you should have to go to college directly after high school. I myself like the idea of just taking a year off. There's nothing wrong with that. It's your choice, and people shouldn't think any less of you for making it.
As far as I know, no one is forced to attend college in the US. Many people take a gap year or delay college until they are fed up with minimum wage jobs or find an area of study that they really want to pursue.
You are correct that many young people go to college without the focus, skills or ambition needed to be successful.
You would find many people would not ever go to college then. Life happens.
What money do you have to travel with as a New HS grad?
Hard to get a job with decent money with only a HS diploma. Most people do at least CC or a trade school for some training/education.
After being out of school you loose the rhythm of going to school, studying. Academic knowledge fades.
