I was always under the impression that Satan's goal was to convince people that Jesus Christ is not Lord. Considering the fact that the purpose of the Book of Mormon is to lead people to believe in Christ, to have faith in Christ, to seek repentance through Christ, to be baptized in the name of Christ, and to keep the commandments of Christ, Satan must be doing a poor job leading people away from God.

As to the state of Christianity in America, we can assume two things:
1) The "Rapture" will remove all those who are real Christians from America and the world, leaving behind those that Jesus described above as well as all the other non-believers.
2) The prospect of the United States existing through the Tribulation is bleak. Some indicate the collateral damage from the Gog-Magog conflict (Ezekiel 38 and 39). Some point to America as being Mystery Babylon which is destroyed in one day (Revelation 18).
Whatever happens to the United States, it will be then become unlike what we have known. The antichrist forces Israel into a peace treaty (Daniel 9:27). It is a coercive treaty that likely puts Israel at a security disadvantage because the antichrist promises her peace and later orchestrates an attack. Even with Obama being in office, no one would actually directly threaten Israel today. Thus, something changes in America such that one of the following will be true:
1) The United States will cease to exist
2) The United States will be feckless, ineffective, weak

Of course they are. It's common knowledge that there are spiritual fights over earthly territories, and the US during the touted "Great Awakening" of the 1800's was unquestionably one such target. If you delve into religious history, you will discover a staggering load of crazy, openly unbiblical religious thought the spiritually restless fell hook, line, and sinker for during this period. Mormonism is just one in that exceedingly long list. They just happen to be one of the few who thought it better to employ practical businessmen to rule their church/business instead of the more spiritually minded. The spiritual thus became a tag-along, a convenient prop offering excitement and not divine knowledge, giving such godless entities that much needed social respectability facade they crave to this day. The simple beauty of the Gospel? Too boring for them, so they made it "exciting, fresh, new", inserting man's ideas of God wherever they thought they could get away with it. Not.

Personally, I love the "Mormon" church, and it has brought me closer to God. The spirit in the LDS church is tremendous. It does seem to bring out the hypocrisy in other Christians, as they start doing things that Jesus would never do.
