Method 1 :

3/8=b/40
b/40 = 3/8

Multiplied by the LCD of the denominators (i.e. 40):
(b/40) × 40 = (3/8) × 40
b = 15

Method 2 :

3/8=b/40

Applied cross-multiplication :
8 × b = 3 × 40
8b = 120

Divide by 8 :
8b/8 = 120/8
b = 15

when you have a proportion you cross multiply. numerator on the left of the equal times the denominator on the right of the equals ....equals the the denominator on the left times the numerator on the right.

8b = 120
b = 15

try this one
the first denominator is 8, look it becomes 40 in the 2nd denominator, why? just multiply 5 to 8 you get 40
the first numerator is 3, multiply 5, you get 15 which is the answer,
solved in just a second.

VERY EASY! 40 x 3 = 120 / 8 = 15

Multiply both sides of the equation by 40:
(3/8)*40 = (b/40)*40
120/8 = b

Simplify:
b = 15
