Each state has several versions of the test. Best to know the whole book

you can look at the California dmv website for sample questions to study with ; the questions are the same ones used on the tests at the dmv

The test is easy if you are prepared, difficult if you are not prepared.

If you study the manual, you'll find that every question asked on the test is answered in than manual. So, if you know the information in the manual, you'll have no problems with the test. However, read the questions carefully because they can be a bit tricky sometimes. If you get nervous and try to get through the test quickly, you'll likely not do very well. Be calm, take your time, and read each question and each answer choice very carefully.

You said it yourself, you know it's different in each state. And you also said you intend to get the handbook and study it.

All the exam question, every one of them, come directly out of that book. They do it like that on purpose. You'll need to know road signs, general rules of the road, and you'll really really need to know the specific rules and restrictions for new / teen drivers.

In just about every location in the world, they pound on the teen driver rules in the exam. You want to memorize all the stuff about curfews, maximum passengers, how old / experienced your supervising driver must be, alcohol use, all of it.

There are always a few technicality questions in every exam, like minimum liability limits or maximum GVW, because they need to mark at least some answers wrong here and there. But if you can get the new driver rules and rules of the road stuff right, you'll nail the exam down in one shot.
