M is the mid-point of FG.
Then, FM = MG
5y + 13 = 5 - 3y
8y = -8
y = -1

FG
= FM + MG
= (5y + 13) + (5 - 3y)
= 2y + 18
= 2(-1) + 18
= 16

As FM = MG and FM + MG = FG or 2 FM or 2 MG = FG , since M being mid point between point F and point G , we can equalize the term , 5y+ 13 = 5 -3y , so 5y + 3y = 5-13 , or y = -1 , substituting y = -1 in FM = 5y + 13 , we get FM = 5 ( -1 ) + 13 = 8 , since FG = 2 FM , so FG = 2 X 8 = 16

Since M is the midpoint we know that FM = MG.
FM=5y+13, MG=5-3y
so
5y+13=5-3y
add 3y, subtract 13
8y = -8
y= -1

FM = 5y +13
so
FM= -5 +13 = 8

MG=5-3y
so
MG = 5 +3 = 8

FG = 8+8 = 16
