2.
(a)
Let a miles be the actual distance.

(0.25 in.) : (5 miles) = (5 in.) : (y miles)
0.25 : 5 = 5 : a
0.25 × a = 5 × 5
0.25a = 25
a = 100

Actual distance = 100 miles

(b)
Let b in. be the distance on the map.

(0.25 in.) : (5 miles) = (b in.) : (75 miles)
0.25 : 5 = b : 75
5 × b = 0.25 × 75
5b = 18.75
b = 3.75

Distance on the map = 3.75 inches
