No. I have on occasion when in a potential dangerous situation, tapped my hounds to get their attention. But in general, you should NEVER hit a dog. Most of the time the dog won't know why he's being hit .... you correct and only in the act, you don't physically hit.

And you DO NOT use a crate as punishment. Of all places, his crate should be the one place he knows is safe.

Substitute 'correct' for punishment in your mind-set too.

You should "correct" a dog "at the time" of the bad behavior with a stern voice "no" or "leave" and when the dog obeys you praise it.
If it does not obey you distract the dog with a loud noise or a light touch on its back, along with voice reprimand.
Never reprimand a dog "after" its misbehaved (after means about 3-4 seconds as it will not connect it to the crime.
Hitting a dog can make the dog "hand shy" and distrustful of you, especially if the dog has a weak temperament or is very submissive.
A hard, disrespectful or very Dominant dog may well retaliate if given physical punishment and bite or growl at the perpetrator.

No, never. Dogs don't come trained, that's your responsibility. If you haven't taught it, it won't understand right from wrong.

Constant supervision, contain when you can't, immediate correction only when caught in the act.

NO! It is NEVER okay to hit a dog. ( Any more than it is okay to hit a baby or infant.) If you do not CATCH the dog IN the ACT, it will have NO idea, why you are hitting it (later) Even if you stick a dog's nose in poo - it will NOT understand that the poo-ing inside was wrong. Hitting teaches NOTHING but FEAR, so don't EVER do it. It is entirely ineffective as a corrective training tool with dogs.

Hitting will only make the dog afraid of you or hand-shy & some dogs may become fear biters in response... to being HIT. Encouraging the dog to BECOME a defensive FEAR BITER is NOT a good IDEA.

Ultimately, it is YOUR FAULT the dog did something wrong. You left the dog unwatched, uncrated, unsupervised, and it chewed up something you left where IT COULD FIND IT , or you didn't come home soon enough, or you didn't take it out soon enough & it had an accident, etc. Or you gave it too much freedom, or you have not taken it to obedience classes, etc. But when it is YOUR FAULT (and you KNOW it is) taking out YOUR frustration over what it did (since it was not watched & allowed to do whatever) - is never right, by ABUSING a dumb animal. Dogs have the intelligence level of about a 3-4 yr old child, puppies even less.

A light tap but nothing that'll hurt the dog physically.

Not at all. You should punish it by putting it in a cage but never hit a dog.
