I am sorry, I think I need to clarify. I know what relativism is. I'm asking what your thoughts are about it and it's effect on society, not an explanation as to what it is.

It has been an unmitigated disaster. It destroys the concept of moral imperatives which undergrid all forms of self control, and replaces them with a standard of ever changing concepts based on whatever foundation the individual wishes.

If YOU were to build a home -- on which foundation would you build it -- solid rock, or shifting sands?

If society is crumbling it is because of the shifting sands of relativism.

Cannibals can eat human flesh according to their ethics. Civilized people will not do that - that is ethical relativism.

I believe that relativism is a spineless strategy of thought. There is a shared or dominant viewpoint in the world and there is also the ideal of objectivity, since we are all rational creatures. To believe in relativism is to attribute individuals with a creative freedom and individuality which is mythic. It is also a dividing theory which can't allow for the reality of concerted political action. I don't think that there ever has been objective truth out there, but I do believe that it is an ideal that we should aspire to in thought. I believe that politics should be inclusive of everyone and take account of difference, but it is the way that difference is theorised in relativism that seems problematic to me.
