關於them whom?

這不關英國英語或美國英語，是「正式書寫」必須講究文法。主要分別在於「逗點」。

下列幾種寫法都正確，注意標點符號和 some 的大小寫：

There are forty students in the class. Some of them already have some background knowledge about this course.
There are forty students in the class; some of them already have some background knowledge about this course.
There are forty students in the class, some of whom already have some background knowledge about this course.

第一句用「句點」，表示前後兩句為各自獨立的句子，所以後句用大寫 Some of them。 them 是代名詞，取代前句的 students。

第二句用「分號 ；」，是一個「逗點」上面加一個「句點」，表示前後兩句既是屬於有密切關係的同一句話（逗點），但語意比較獨立，視為獨立的句子（句點），所以 some of them 用小寫，但為了表示獨立語意， 用 them 取代前面的 students。

第三句用「逗號」，表示這是一句話，前後算是「子句」。英語兩個「子句」間必須有連接詞來連接。 them 是代名詞，不能當連接詞，而 whom 是「關係」代名詞，有連接詞的功用，由於兩個子句間是「逗號」，所以一定要用 whom 才能起連接作用。

這是指正式書寫而言，若是口語，沒有逗號、分號、句號之分，說 some of them 聽起來比較像說話， 講 some of whom 聽起來像唸書或背演講稿。

兩個子句中間要有連接詞. 假如你用some of them, 那麼要改寫成:
There are forty students in the class, and some of them already have some background knowledge about this course.

some of which 的 which 是關係代名詞, 有連接詞的作用, 可以看成
and some of them

因為你的老師/教科書是用舊一套的英國英語文法作為標準，假如用美國式英語寫作some of them應該是沒有問題的。

語文是要"實用的"，今天可能除了英女皇那一輩會這樣講話，現代的英語人都好少用WHOM的了。
