New house and oven smells like gas when turned on?

We recently moved jnto a new home thag is around one hundred years old. It was remodeled by the company that sold if I am correct. They replaced the microwave amd stoves. There have been some problems with the microwave, but today I turned on the oven and it really smelled like gas right after i I turned it on. I turned it off after a few minutes and it still smelled. Is there something wrong or what should I do? My mother owns the house and I was wondering if this was normal.

If you can't pinpoint the cause, call your gas company and ask if they can make a free inspection to find out the cause.

does it have automatic ignition or is there possibly a pilot light out on it, either the oven, broiler or range top burner?

Try a leak test In a squeeze bottle put some water and some dish detergent and put a small amount onto each joint or fitting of the gas lines and hookups. If You see bubbles forming You have a leak ,.

Check the pilot light or igniter. You shouldn't be smelling gas when you turn the oven on.

Ben asks a good question - Does it have a pilot light?

It could also be the gas connection in the rear of the stove was done correctly. They may not have used teflon tape to seal the threads. (You can't get good help nowadays!) However, a leaky rear connector would smell whether the stove was in use or not.

If you didn't turn off the gas "after a few minutes", then you really stunk up the house; it takes a good while to clear it out.
