It's simple. St. Nicholas lived and helped the poor in the northern hemisphere. His legend obviously created stories attached to him. Naturally he would eventually have to reside in a secret place and that place in the legend would be the north pole.

Answer: The Santa Claus myth was created in the north, so it would only make sense they'd use the unreachable pole as his secret hiding place. I'm guessing it starting with St. Nicholas, then snowballed over the course of time (pun intended).

Too many scientists at the South Pole.

The flight time on Christmas Eve is shorter from the North Pole to most of the places Santa has to visit.

I guess it was a personal choice. Plus, the north pole is really isolated so he doesn't have to worry about people snooping on him and his factory.

Actually it is a mistake to believe Santa lives full time at the North Pole. I believe he does live at the south pole, but only in Northern summers.

That's not Santa. Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas. He was Bishop of Myra in present day Turkey. He used to distribute gifts to the poor in secret. He is celebrated on 6th December, the day of his death.
Father Christmas was hi-jacked by Christians. He was originally known as the Nordic pagan figure Father Winter and celebrated around the time of the Winter Solstice (21st/22nd December) in a festival aimed at reasuring people in the far north of Europe that the sun would return.
