Which camera lens should I buy?

I'm looking to buy a new, larger camera lens and am struggling to decide between two. They are:

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM telephoto zoom lens

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens

I currently only have a canon EOS 100D (but will upgrade in the future) and would like to use my new lens to take pictures of wildlife (such as birds) and more long distance objects. The 55-250mm is £168 cheaper than the bigger lens and has STM whereas the other has USM. I also hear that the 70-300m becomes considerably soft 250mm+. Would you recommend I purchase the 55-250mm over the 70-300mm as that is where I am leaning at the moment? I would appreciate some help.
Thanks in advance

This is a central crop of about 25% of full frame of a nuthatch around 10 meters away.
Taken with the 70-300mm IS USM at 300mm and f/8 - handheld on an EOS70D at ISO800
Looks sharp to me as were the majority of the other shots I took that day.
I have just upgraded from the 55-250 IS Mk1 - so not the STM version. The 55-250 is sharp but not as quick to focus as the 70-300. The STM will probably outperform the 70-300 for AF.
Possible disadvantage of the 70-300 is that the whole lenshood and focus ring rotate during AF - it is a bit "agricultural"!
Summary - for image quality - the 70-300 IS USM
For lightness, compactness and AF - the 55-250 STM.
I went for the 70-300!

Just avoid the 75-300mm Mk III, it's a total dog.

The 55-250mm gives a good balance of performance and price. It won't fit a full-frame model, but neither will your 18-55mm, and the only time to, "Upgrade," is when your camera is broken.

For wildlife, 300mm is the realistic minimum but what you really need is a good camouflaged tent and tons of patience.
