Is getting a bachelor degree even worth it anymore?

I have asked some people around and most people said no because you'll be in debt while trying to find a job within your major.

Is this true?
Is it worth spending thousands of money to go to college and then end up not finding a job right after college?

Plenty of college graduates find jobs. And getting trained for a job isn't why you should go to college. If all you want is specific job training, apprentice with a plumber.

It depends on the degree. Many liberal arts degrees which are often procured by students who spend 4 or more years with no real future Job in mind are in the group you describe. Contrast that to someone who procures a degree in Accounting, Computer fields (e.g. MIS, Programming, Network Engineering), or the Engineering fields (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Petroleum, etc), Physical Sciences (Chemistry, Physics,), and other fields that clearly have direct training for the future job. These people will have a busy undergrad period, will work very hard in school, will have job opportunities when they graduate. High School teachers have done many a disservice by telling students to "get their degree and the job will follow" - much like and equally as incorrect as "build the retail mall and people will come" statement. First decide what you are considering to do; then decide what it takes to do it; then decide if there are jobs in that field and make your decision from that. This takes a serious student with serious intentions, the willingness to work in school throughout the school years, and the foresight to check hard data for job opportunities. Unfortunately many students drift from one major to another seeking a degree in a program that provides them little to NO job opportunities but which seems "neat at the moment"; often they change major as work becomes undesirable or difficult because they have no focus and no reason being in higher education and they somehow graduate with a degree that will not get them a JOB. Go in to get skills and training in a degree that will GET you a JOB; this is your purpose for going to school, not to "cruise for 4 years because you do not want to work in a job right out of high school".

Yes, a bachelors degree is worth it. Of course you need to pick the right major. You need to research what pays well, what is experiencing growth or is projected to remain steady in terms of job opportunities. You certainly don't want something that is a dying profession, one that has few available jobs, or one that pays too low. You also might consider affordable options, like doing part of the program at a community college or finding out if there is any grant money, scholarships or whatever available to help you. Find out what job search help the school offers and what their placement rate is.

Depends onw hat you want to do with your life. There are a lot of professions that require a Bachelor degree to apply.
The economy is bad, unemployment is high. Finding any job that is full time and pays more than mininuim wage is hard.

You can get a two year career degree at a community college.

Depends what you major in and how flexible you are in terms of job opportunities. Many people have to be flexible and take a job - any job - to start.

With so many people doing BAs it's not an elite degree anymore. Unfortunately, it also means not doing it means you're falling further behind.

I'd look at community college for options - a good vocational program will get you working immediately, if that's your primary goal.
