What's your opinion on Metalcore and/or Post Hardcore?

I personally enjoy many different subgenres of Metal as well as other genres of music. I seem to notice M-core and PH-core get such a bad rep. I admit there are quite a few bands that sound bland and unexciting, but there are a few pretty good ones too. Just curious on what your take on these subgenres are.

What Purple Haze said. Older post-hardcore bands like Husker Du and Fugazi are way better than whats currently being marketed as post-hardcore. Same goes for metalcore. In the 90s it was something new and fresh. Bands like Integrity, Earth Crisis and Deadguy each had their own sound. Since around 2002 when Killswitch Engage released Alive or Just Breathing all metalcore bands have sounded pretty much the same with the screamed verse/clean chorus formula, and guitar lines ripped straight from the Gothenburg scene.

Like most genres, there are a few gems and then thousands who try to emulate them. I tire of the breakdown/whiny chorus formula and surface-level lyrics pretty easily.

original genres are classic but the new age ones suck

When it comes to the scene-associated branch of those genres, which I think that you're talking about, I think that it is crap.

I don't know much about metalcore, but Jane Doe by Converge is an undeniable classic of the genre. As for post-hardcore, it's awesome. The 90s, in particular, was an exceptional decade for post-hardcore, and the 80s & 2000s had some good post-hardcore, too. I agree with what Tristan Geoff & Ryan said, thoigh; the original post-hardcore/metalcore acts are quite good, but the more mainstream ones are lacking in quality.

I love these genres. My problem with them is the media and scene kid's interpretations of them. Post means after, and none of these bands have hardcore punk influence (swapping it out for that early 2000's Dark Emo-Pop stuff)... what do these kids think it means? Post-Hardcore refers to bands influenced by hardcore punk, but put them together in various ways. Really, it's not much of a particular sound than a lot of groups influenced by the same thing (like other post- genres).

"Metalcore" on the other hand barely resembles the mid-90's Metallic Hardcore sound... it's just a bunch of chugging riffs, predictable song structures, awful vocals, and terrible, terrible fashion sense (I don't think music should ever be strongly tied to fashion trends).

Examples:

Metalcore- Coalesce, Earth Crisis, Cave In, Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan, Teethforteeth

Post-Hardcore- Touche Amore, At the Drive In, Small Brown Bike, Hot Water Music, Jesus Lizard, Husker Du

I dislike emo and core because it's just whiny kids who've lived privileged lives b*tching about frivolous bullsh*t as if they were the center of the universe and every tiny personal problem they had was the biggest tragedy ever. I also dislike their little b*tch screams but I guess that fits their theme.

I dont hate them or love them. There are so many different categories out there that its not hard to find something within those categories to listen to. But for giving them hate or not liking them I dont have the time.

At the Drive-In is a classic post-hardcore band. I don't know many newer ones but I like some of Alesana's albums.

Don't care much for either of them with very few exceptions. For post-hardcore, I like the band letlive. and I enjoy a few metalcore songs but I haven't found any metalcore band whose music I enjoy more than one or two songs. Apart from those exceptions, I find metalcore and post-hardcore very bland and generic with most, if not all bands sounding more or less the same. Kinda like extreme metal, just can't get into the music or vocals.
