He has put himself forward for the Republican nomination. He has yet to be selected as the Republican candidate for the Presidency. Although he is popular among rednecks and those who think it's all a reality TV show, there are large parts of the Republican party who know he's an idiot. If he manages to get the Republican nomination, he still has to win the election. Many think that the great American public wouldn't be that stupid, but remember they elected Regan.

The world's best chance of avoiding nuclear obliteration would be for the Republicans to pick someone else and for Trump to stand as a third party candidate. That would guarantee a Democrat in the White House. He (or she if it's Hilary) might not be much better, but at least someone might hide the big red button.
