Can Alex be short for Alexis?

My name is Alexis, and I've always hated it. I just don't think it suits me and I don't like the way it sounds. I also don't like that it's used as a boy's name. I'm moving out of state next year for college, and I thought that when I get there, I should just start telling people my name's Alex. I think that's a much better name. I don't want to start now, because I live in a small town and everyone already knows me as Alexis. Would it be weird to do that?

Yeah, that's why I'm reluctant to do it because I feel like if they find out my name's Alexis, they're going be like "wtf" because it's usually short for Alexander or Alexandria

No not at all :) You could also use Lexi or Lexis

I have never heard of Alexis used as a boy's name. Alex, however, often is. So I don't get what your problem is.

Try Lexi.

Yes, Alex can be a nickname for Alexis. I have actually met more male Alex's than I have male Alexis's. So, I actually consider Alex to be more masculine than Alexis. Lexie is another option if you want a female only name, but I think Alexis is quite feminine and a very pretty name.

I had people call me cat after years of being just catherine. When you go out of state you get a fresh start!
