They are a lot like little kids when you drop them off at school on the first day. They want to cling and cry and think it's the end of the world. Once you're gone and they are distracted by the teacher and other kids and fun things to do and they stop crying and have a good time.
In the case of your cat, once you were out of sight and it setted down it most likely curled up in a bed in a cage and let the illness take over and feel sick or just feel sleepy from the medication etc.
It's just the first couple of minutes and all you remember is seeing it freak out but I'm sure if you called they'd tell you the cat is resting quietly. They don't continue having a melt down like you saw, they settle down. You did what was in the cat's best interest. Stop worrying!
