why would it make a difference if it was dark?
to be safe, when you use your phone turn it so the screen is facing outwards, you may need to shout to be heard but if you explain to people near by I'm sure they would understand.

also after long use of the phone make sure the static electricity generated is discharged fully by standing barefoot on grass for ten minutes or placing your hand in running water
