According to Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary 7th Edition, Maths is an informal way to say 'mathematics'. It's ‘the science of numbers and shapes’. However, there is no general definition of maths. There are various meanings to everyone, depending on their age , experience and interest to math. Some may think that math is one of the subject at school. Some may think that maths is a tool in daily life. Some may think that math is a method to understand abstraction. And to me, maths is an investigation of the rule of the universe, a kind of beauty, and a picture which is painted by many people, but it will never be completed.

Maths is abbreviated from Mathematics.
To explain what is Mathematics, browsing around the internet and you can get bunches of answers.
However, there is no answer specific to 'Maths' itself.
We know it is inherited from 'Mathematics' but why?
Why not 'Math'? Why it must be 'Maths'?

This is to emphasize its diversifying nature. Mathematics, as the language of nature, must cover certain aspects. These include quantity, structure, space, and change.

But why? Why these aspects must be included in Mathematics?

This directly reflects our way, human's instinct way, of reconizing or studying the 'nature'. The whole story comes far back to the way the new-born thinks.

First of all, he sees the world with his primitve eyes after breathing the first drop of air.
He finds something is different from others. First of all, he counts them, and that results in 'quantity'.
With some further effort, he differentiates one with the other, by their quality, which we called 'structure'.
The 'sturcture' is contained in some carrier, or container, and he calls these 'space'.
So, after that, he finds these 'structures' moving around the outer 'space', or even converting to other 'structures' within its inner 'space'. This process is 'change'.

So, that is why Maths must be Maths, but not Math.

Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement. Math is all around us, in everything we do. It is the building block for everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices, architecture (ancient and modern), art, money, engineering, and even sports.

Since the beginning of recorded history, mathematics discovery has been at the forefront of every civilized society, and in use in even the most primitive of cultures. The needs of math arose based on the wants of society. The more complex a society, the more complex the mathematical needs. Primitive tribes needed little more than the ability to count, but also relied on math to calculate the position of the sun and the physics of hunting.

是一科很需要邏輯的學科，
能通過計算來得知和解釋各事物的形態和部份事件發生的原因
也能通過描述該物件的特徵和不變性來表達一些極度抽象的物件 ( i.e. 拓樸學)
例如我們可以通過計算來得知買n件東西所需要的金錢
例如我們能用calibi-yau manifold的characteristics (特徵)(如Genus , Euler Characteristics , 等) 來令我們不需要考慮整個物件的形態來描述該物件

數學的很多東西都能應用到物理學
如topology, Geometric group theory, 和基本的用以表達的公式等。

是美式英文簡寫...源自大學的科目用詞...變成一般人都會用代表算術/數學科。
