There is a vertical asymptote where the denominator is zero. If the denominator has an odd power, as in "c", there will be a change of sign at the vertical asymptote. Otherwise, not.

Any terms with a higher power of x in the denominator than in the numerator will go to zero as x goes to infinity. For a, c, and d, this leaves a constant that defines the horizontal asymptote.

"b" is simply a translation and reflection of the square root function. It goes to infinity as x goes to -infinity. It is not defined below or right of (3, -1).

To find the x-intercepts, solve each one for f(x) = 0. To find the y-intercepts, evaluate f(0).
a) no x-intercepts, no y-intercepts. Asymptotes: x=0, y=1.
b) x-intercept at 3-1^2 = 2. y-intercept at (√3)-1. Asymptotes: none.
c) x-intercept at 2/-5 + 1 = 3/5. y-intercept at 3. Asymptotes: x=1, y=5.
d) x-intercepts at 1±√1. y-intercept at 0. Asymptotes: x=1, y=2.
