這問題不是tense的問題，而是你句子用的verb動詞的問題：

你用了get(has got)即是你認為Tom已經獲得了"造蛋糕的秘方"；但是你的前題描述你只是得知Tom只是提出在那天會向Mary取那秘方。因此你沒有得知當天Tom有否問Mary或Mary是否已經給了他，因此，你說Tom has got the "instruction for making a cake" from Mary 本身文法上沒錯，那只是按你的假設是曾經發生了的事，但是事實是否已經發生則不能確定。

假如是討論句子的合理性，則是毫無根據的句子。根據你已知的情報，你可以講：
Tom had asked Mary for the "instruction for making a cake".合比你寫的句合理。因為用past perfect tense意思可以是指記述過去曾經已經發生了的事 = 你告訴別人你曾經知道Tom曾(在2014年3月6日話會在2014年4月15日都是已經在過去)問過Mary取她的造蛋糕秘方。

要注意動詞才是更重要決定句子的合不合理，Tom got the "recipe"(取得)跟Tom had return the "recipe"(交還)是兩個不同的動作，你其實是get和return都不知，你只是知Tom asked...
