How to invent and sell a toy idea?

I'm 19 and I've always wanted to design and sell toys, because it was a childhood dream after seeing Big, but I'm sure the business of creating toys is far more complicated than depicted.

I have several ideas, but I'm not too sure on how to create, market, and sell them. Do I invent them myself and patent them to sell them? Do I just come up with a concept and design and sell it off that way? Any help would go very appreciated. If you have any relevant books to recommend I would gladly look for them too. Thanks.

You always got to be careful about other people stealing your ideas.

You don't technically need a patent to sell things, and the vast majority of things you can buy are not patented. However, if you have created something 'new and non-obvious', then a patent will allow you to prevent others from making, selling or importing devices that infringe your patent -- assuming you can afford to sue them.
