Do I need college education to work in the government?

I'm currently 17 years old (recently turned) and now a senior in high school. I have started looking into the workforce and my mom and grandma brought up working in the government and taking a test that is required so it'll determine if I'm a GS4 etc. However, (they don't know) I don't want to attend college once I graduate and I want to go straight into working and going from there. I submit an email to them in hopes of getting a response back (which will take three business days) about my concern. I would like to signup for an internship now to see what it's like but I want to talk to my mom about it first and see if that's a smart move or not. But, my question is as it states up above, do I really need an college education to work in the government? This is probably a stupid question but I really do need a better understanding.

Thank you!

You do not need a college degree to work for the federal government. However, you will more than likely be a clerical and won't make much. If you work for the right agency you could work yourself up to a position which pays well. GS-3 and GS-4 is the starting salary for someone without a college degree.

Many agencies don't have clerical positions anymore because of computers. I worked for the Social Security Administration as a Claims Rep (GS-11). I started out as a clerk-stenographer, GS-4, and worked my way up. I could have become a supervisor and more except that I didn't want the responsbility. Social Security doesn't have clericals anymore since the late 1980s when the agency began using computers in the field offices. Claims Reps used to have secretaries but with the advent of the computer they began to do their own clerical work in addition to the work of the claims rep (which would have been okay had the agency increased the number of claims reps). You could probably begin as a service rep. I worked there 32 years.

I don't know what it's like in other federal agencies but I can tell you this - steer clear of social security and the IRS and any other agency which deals with the public. Thankless jobs with few rewards and way too much stress.

I suggest that you file applications with all of the federal government jobs in your city (or the nearest large city) with the exception of Social Security and the IRS.

A postal carrier works for the government. They do not need a college degree. What job do you want in government.

Why did you email MIT? That is a university. It has nothing to do with the government

Most of the people that I personally know that work in government, don't know a darn thing. Just go there looking like you've been stomped on for being a fool and they will hire you.
