2. See if you can get into Safe Mode. Another alternative is if your computer is branded (not custom made), you can try to boot into its restore partition.

I am not sure what kind of hard drive you have.
Regardless, you need to connect the data cable and the power cable.
Also - check the BIOS setting of your old computer (when you plug with the old HD).

I am not sure why you need to keep thw Windows XP.
Since Windows XP is no longer supported and the issue is from the hard drive with Windows XP, you should back up the data and format the hard drive.
Windows boot manager can be tricky.
It does not sound like a hardware issue.
