i got a C for my first year at university. how good or or bad is it?

Depends on the job you want to do whether they require a master OR you're planning to write MCAT/ other exams that require high GPA.

C is okay but should do better in case you have other plans in the future. Remember, doing well in university is not necessary but it will definitely give your more options when you graduate - like research jobs/ master/ other schools.
