Plessy v. Ferguson: Why was the Plessy decision overturned?

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled segregation in the public schools was unconstitutional. Chief Justice Earl Warren, in writing the Court opinion, declared "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" because they violated the 14th Amendment Equal Protection Clause.
