why cannot 'they had a fought'

You must know that tenses are only applicable when the word is a verb. 'Fight' in this case should be a noun(名詞) and' fought ' cannot be used in this case because it's a verb , fought can be used if the sentence changes to 'Tom and Jim fought last night when Tim was giving him a talk'
