Hey,
I am doing an assignment and I was wondering if anyone knew if police dogs are trained in accordance with animal welfare legislation. I can't find much about it on google. All i found was how police dogs are excluded from the legislation on the docking of dogs tails.
I found some stories of neglect from individual dog handlers but nothing that actually states the intensiveness of the training or what it entails in detail.
Does the Animal Welfare Act of 2006 affect their training much? are police dogs exempt from most of it?

I train police dogs daily, have been for 37 years and I can tell you for certain that in the USA, we use methods that work and have been proven to work, but, do not fall under any animal welfare act.Training a dog to work the street is much different then the ideas that certain people who have never been there have. Yes, the training is intense, some places more then others, but, again, we are discussing dogs who must engage dangerous people and STAY engaged for the duration.

Whatever they've done to him, he's such a scared little soul.
They work the dogs hard- these dogs aren't just looking scary and going for a stroll- these dogs are put in life threatening situations.
They push the dogs as far as they will go- then further still.
Some dogs love the work- they live for it. While others, like mine are in a sense, 'broken' and discarded.
Whatever they've done to him, he's such a scared little soul.

The training gets so intense that many time the dogs redirect their aggression onto handlers. A very dangerous situation unless you are very experienced. Handlers & trainers are way on top of almost any situation, cause they have to train for any thing that they may come across.
In some instances the dogs are so conditioned to respond to certain stimuli & you could say that the dogs aggression was nothing but a bridge to get the desired responses.
