Do Cats have to learn how to purr or is it instinctual?

I have to cats that I raised from the time they were really small. I had to bottle feed both of them and the vet thinks they were both around three weeks old when I got them. They are from two different litters and I got them a year apart. They both purred when we first got them but after a few weeks both of them stopped and now that they are grown neither of them purr at all. I was wondering if purring was maybe something that they learned from their mothers.

It comes natural to them some cats are very loud and others are very quiet. Mine is a very quiet one most of the time you can often feel him purring but not hear it. He makes up for it with a loud meow.

It is usually an instinct. some cats like to purr a lot, some cats don't really like to purr at all.

Did someone teach you how to laugh or giggle? NOPE! Same with purring.

instinctual.

It usually is a natural trait they have, as it is the only way they do communicate sometimes.
