1. The soft iron, being a ferromagnetic substance, can concentrate magnetic field lines. As such, the magnetic flux density of the electromagnetic will increase, leading to an increase in strength of the electromagnet.2. Any ferromagnetic substance can achieve the same effect as soft iron. Examples are nickel and cobalt.
