Your itinerary is very logical and typical, but there 2 very big troubles, you really don't want to visit Vatican to see the great St. Peter's Basilica and its Museum? And you seem don't go to visit David in Galleria dell' Accademia in Florence?

To me, if you don't visit the above 2 places, your Italy tour can be said as a failure. Everyone should visit St. Peter's and Sistine Chapel in Vatican to know what the real greatness is. And you will be amazed by David created by Michaelangelo and ask why a statue can be so vivid that it just likes a real young man was turned to a piece of marble by magic, you even can feel life strength from the statue.

In fact, you also miss the Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci in Santa Maria delle Grazie of Milan. However, since queue to see the painting is so long that I heard you need to book the visit a year before, you may try to book the visit first.

2 more suggestions to you, if you have time, you may visit Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Many books say it is the most romantic place in Rome, I agree the Steps have good view of Rome, but it will only become really romantic if the Steps with beautiful flower pots as many pictures depicted.

If you visit Venice with your companion, don't save the money to ride on a Gondola, nothing is better than see the whole Venice in this way.
