Is my Woolly Bear Caterpillar dying or cocooning?

Earlier today, I found a Woolly Bear Caterpillar at my local creek. I brought him home in a cup and made him a habitat with Wikihows instructions. Now 5 hours later, he is not moving much and is surrounded by silk-like threads. I'm pretty sure he's making a cocoon but I'm not sure. I don't see a spider and I'm pretty sure there's not one in there anyway. He is suspended in between two twigs that are standing up against the sides of the cup (another reason I think he's cocooning). Please help!

Sounds like your little friend is starting to pupate. In time, it will completely enshroud itself with this web.
Just leave it undisturbed and in a couple weeks you may have an interesting surprise.
Usually caterpillars called woolly bears are the large and pretty Isabella Tiger Moth as adults.
Very nice find, I would release the adult moth (butterfly) as soon as it can fly to make more wooly bears.
My aunt keeps caterpillars, truly fascinating critters.
