word equation : carbon + Oxgen ---> Carbon monoxide
The Chemical equation is 2C (s) + O2 (g) ---> 2 CO2 (g)
but not
C (s) + O2----> CO 2(g)

First of all ,The Chemical nature of Carbon monoxide is CO
not CO2
Therefore , The Chemical equation should be
2C+O2 ------> 2CO
As O2 cannot be separated by its own.
