At my house, we use fixed blades because they're easier to clean in the dishwasher after we use them. We only used folding blades for pocket knives we use outdoors. When we visit Massachusetts we have to remember not to take any knives that have a double-edge blade more than 1 1/2 inches long

This would depend. If I was going out and harness up a water buffalo I would take my fix bladed bullock knife with me. If setting on the front porch making a bamboo flute for a kid I would take my 3 blade pocket knife.

Another way to ask the question, which is better; screw driver or hammer? A knife is a tool. For instance one wouldn't skin out a deer with a 10" Bowie nor would you try to clear brush from a camp site with a little pocket knife. They are tools, that's why your kitchen set has so many different blades.
As far as daily carry a folder has the advantage of fitting in a pocket comfortably. Since my state allows the carry of fixed blades I also have one of those I carry.
The fixed blade is going to be stronger and generally more comfortable to hold for extended use.

Since you asked in computer networking, I'd suggest a multitool from a reputable brand of your choice (I prefer Victorinox, but the Leatherman Tread also looks very interesting. 'Coming Soon' now for half a year :-((( ).

Well this definitely isn't the right section for this question. It all depends on what you want to do with the knife. Pocket (foldable) knives are good for carrying in your pocket, they can generally do anything a fixed blade can do, but their length is limited by the length of the handle. A fixed blade knife can be easier to take care of because crud can't get stuck up in the moving parts, they are also sturdier if you are going to use them for certain activities, although a good pocket knife should work just as well unless you are using it as a pry (which I should hope you don't plan to do).
