(x - 3)² = 34
x - 3 = ± √34
x = 3 ± √34
x^2 -6x = 25

x^2-6x-25=0 first move the constant to the other side by adding 25 to both sides
x^2-6x=25 now halve the linear coefficient, square it, add it to both sides...
