If the roots of a quadratic equation are –4 and 2, the equation is equivalent to (x + 4)(x – 2) = 0
(x – 4)(x + 2) = 0
(x + 4)(x + 2) = 0
(x – 4)(x – 2) = 0

(x+4)(x-2)=0
the roots are always the opposite of the numbers in the brackets

(x + 4)(x – 2) = 0

(x + 4)(x - 2) = 0, because the roots always take the opposite sign from the equation.

x + 4 = 0 (subtract four from each side)
x = -4

x - 2 = 0 (add two to each side)
x = 2
