Because it sells, the really sad part of politics is that it's all about 'advertising' now, and if it works, you milk it, if it doesn't, you repackage, find another angle to sell the public on it, and try that.

The awful part is of course that people buy-in, which means the World becomes more, and more warped, and most people are 'enjoying' the drama so much, they won't even notice, until it's too late.

If it's colonialism then why haven't those countries been named part of that nation?

Coping with the rigours of extreme seasonality at high latitudes led to the development of Science and the Industrial Revolution. Fail to keep enough supplies to get through the Winter and your little town is finished. So they became adventurers and developers of technology making use of resources from all over the world. Then in order to guarantee these resources, particularly where other great powers might seek to deny them, they planted colonies.

The justification is that order should be maintained and a democratic system of government (to fit with the Mother country) be offered. Hence the appetite for adventurism. Ask Russia why it still plays at 'The Great Game'? Ask China why it is economically colonising the parts of Africa which the West was forced to abandon?
